As announced during the PlayStation Experience 2016 event in Anaheim California last Dec. 4, gamers who anticipate the game will now have some pretty good idea about Hideo Kojima's new creepy game, Death Stranding. First, it will run on the Decima games engines. Second, the Kojima's new game genius will be created by Guerrilla Games. Read on to understand what these announcements mean.
The Significance Of The Decima Engine
For those who do not know it yet, the Decima Engine is a technology staple with games from Guerrilla. It's the same engine that powers that stunning Horizon Zero Dawn. From a statement, Guerrilla's managing director Hermen Hulst said that while Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding would share the same engine, Death Stranding will have a more evolved version of the Decima. Hulst added as an explanation that their engine has taken a quantum leap for the last couple of years for the sole purpose of readying it for Death Stranding. Aside from rendering, Decima will have plenty of tools to use from AI to logics to physics. Things that Hulst believes are important for game development.
Guerrilla's 'Trust' Made The Choice For Kojima
Even before, Sony's lead architect Mark Cerny and Kojima had visited several first-party studios to look for a technical partner. Kojima is also well known for creating the game and being the genius behind Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, which used the Fox Engine at Konami where he first worked for. What sold Guerrilla and made it their ultimate choice is the trust that the Dutch developer gave Kojima upon their first meeting. This happened when Guerilla handed the Metal Gear creator a box containing Decima's source code sans any contracts signed.
To quote Kojima, "This box is the treasure of Guerrilla, and it symbolizes everything they've been working on so far. Just meeting me and immediately handing me this, made me feel very special. It gave me a really special feeling. I'm very confident that Herman is completely insane."
Guerilla's Excitement For Death Stranding
Hulst also expressed his excitement to work on the latest game, Death Stranding. The managing director of Guerrilla waxed lyrical on the great number of things that the Guerrilla Games technology can do. It's not only a graphics technology, which is something that Guerrilla Games are well-known for, it's also something that they can use to script AI and use it for enemies that would look even more real during gameplay. This makes the Decima very intuitive as a toolset for game development.
Death Stranding will be Hideo Kojima's debut game under Kojima Productions, his new development studio. Two trailers of the new title has been released so far; one during the E3 2016 and another one during The Game Awards last Thursday, Dec. 1.
