The Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany is probably the most famous of all the racetracks in the world. Drivers, car manufacturers, and tuners have gone to the famous 'ring to test out their limits and to beat other world records in attempts to be the best. This time around, the recently released Mercedes AMG GT R just set a new world record and is now officially the fastest rear-wheel drive production car in the whole world.
The AMG GT R Beats The Gumpert Apollo And A Ferrari
The Mercedes AMG GT R finished the lap in an amazing seven minutes and 10.9 seconds, a record that is more than six-tenths of the previous record. The previous record was that of a Gumpert Apollo that finished the lap in seven minutes 11.57 seconds. The official record of the AMG GT R also beat the lap time of the Ferrari 488 GTB with a momentous 10.71 seconds.
A Heavily Modified GT Engine Was Used
A heavily tuned version of the AMG GT's engine was used for the Mercedes-AMG GT R. It is a twin turbo 4.0liter V8 engine that produces 577 brake horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The AMG GT R can reach zero to 60 miles in just 3.6 seconds. The car is also packed with functional aero kits that include a larger front splitter and a carbon fiber rear wing, an active diffuser element is also mounted within the underbody that helps move the car forward by 40mm once above 50 miles per hour in Race mode.
The AMG GT R is significantly less expensive than the price of a Lexus LF-A and the Ferrari 488 GTB. The top end model can be directly compared to a McLaren 570S coupe and is just cheaper by five pounds. Deliveries for Britain are expected to arrive starting April 2017.
