'Star Trek 3' Out In 2016?

Is Paramount already gearing up Star Trek 3 for 2016?

Producer of May 17's Star Trek Into Darkness Bryan Burk spoke recently with Digital spy about the franchise. The discussion mostly centered around Darkness but Burk was also asked about a potential Star Trek 3 release date.

"We're definitely talking about the next one," Burk replied, "but we haven't talked about a release date. We don't want to wait four years, the same amount of time between the last one and this one, but it's going to be a big year to celebrate, hopefully."

This could indicate that Paramount is considering a 2016 release date. A release that year would seem especially appropriate given that it marks the 50-year anniversary of Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek TV series. Paramount may want to use this as a marketing tool.

We don't even know for sure, however, if J. J. Abrams will be coming back to direct the third film, given that he is planning to direct Star Wars 7, to be released in 2015 or 2016.

Meanwhile, details on Star Trek Into Darkness have finally begun to surface, including information on the film's villain, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. However, Burk remained tight-lipped when pressed for details.

"We like the idea of keeping secrets not for any other reason than to keep the experience of going to the movies and not having seen anything before it... ," Burke said. "You want this to be a movie that anybody can get into. It's not really a sequel, it's its own thing."

However, Burk did mention that the film will have more connections to the original Star Trek franchise.

"One of the things is that the movie will always be for Star Trek fans," Burk said. "In the process of all us five producers working together, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof, to a slightly lesser extent, are crazy hard-core Trekkies. They understand the world so we had long conversations where they put things in and would be laughing hysterically. I had no clue why they were! There are tons of references and nods."

What do you think? Will Star Trek Into Darkness be any good? And as far as Star Trek 3 goes, should Abrams stay on board as director, even if it takes longer? Or should someone else take over so we can see it by 2016?
