Tyrus Wong was born in Guangzhou, China in 1910. His talent as an artist was discovered at a very early age.
Wong's father took him to California when he was nine years old. He was separated from his mother and sister and they would never see each other again.
His father encouraged his talent by practicing calligraphy. He also went to Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles on a full scholarship.

He was included on the "Disney Legend" hall of fame in 2001. As one of the most respected Chinese- American artist, his arts and works were captured in an independent documentary film "TYRUS,"in 2015.
According to the CNN, Wong also worked for the Warner Brothers as a concept and story artist for 26 years and retired in 1968. After his retirement, he channeled his talents by building hand-made kites.
