Diablo 4 is probably one of the most anticipated installments of the series. A game critic though believes that Blizzard will need to change the old Diablo storyline.
The Storyline So Far
Blizzard just celebrated Diablo's 20th year anniversary during the 2016 BlizzCon event. Fans of the series were hoping that the developer will release Diablo 4. Unfortunately, the only thing fans got is a limited recreation of Diablo 1 playable inside Diablo 3. Blizzard also introduced a new character class which is actually an old one from the previous installments.
The Diablo series storyline so far has always centered on the Lord of Terror. Typically, a hero rises up to defeat him and his minions. A Polygon critic contends that that such theme worked well in Diablo 1 and 2. In Diablo 3, that storyline was expanded to include Angels. There's a perception though that Blizzard has already run out of fresh storylines for a potential Diablo 4 title.
Fortunately, Blizzard is a good storyteller. Other game titles such as StarCraft or Warcraft have provided fans with good stories that keep them engaged. Even Overwatch characters have been provided with colorful backstories that somehow let players connect to the heroes they play.
Possible Diablo Series Reboot
The same critic proposed that Blizzard should start fresh with Diablo 4 by taking out the Lord of Terror from the game. It will be some sort of radical reboot that will allow the developer to create new heroes and villains. With Diablo out of the equation maybe the series can introduce StarCraft like weapons and WarCraft magic spells.
There is only one problem with this proposal. It's no longer a Diablo game if you take out its main character. We can be sure that Blizzard will find a way to create a good storyline for Diablo 4. It's just a matter of time.
