The 2014 Hyundai Equus made its debut at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday March 27, showing a variety of new upgrades.
On the outside, Hyundai has remained conservative for the most part. The vehicle has new 19-inch turbine-style wheels with a polished silver finish. There are lower air-inlet openings on the front fascia and the head lights are newly designed. The front grille bars are also thinner, with sharper contrasts. It also comes with LED fog lamps.
Inside the car, Hyundai added new button iconography to the instrument panel and center stack. There are also new buttons and icons on the steering wheel. There is a new console layout which integrates with 9.2-inch backseat video screens. This aspect is definitely more luxurious than in the previous model, featuring better graphics and materials.
The vehicle includes a revamped suspension for improved ride and handling. Sport mode is improved upon, using air suspension, and normal mode is even more comfortable, according to Hyundai. Additional features include revised front suspension brushings and a snow mode for improved winter control.
The new Equus will include a 5.0-liter Tau V8, making 429 hp and going with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy ranges from 15 mpg in the city to 23 mpg on the highway. There will also be a five-year, 60,000-mile warranty and an interactive owner's manual for the iPad.
Hyundai considered making the Equus part of a new premium brand, but felt that there was enough room for a premium sedan within the Hyundai brand name.
The New York International Auto show opens on Friday March 29 and runs until April 7. Other cars to watch for include the Shelby 1000, Jaguar XR, Chrysler SRT Viper TA and the 2014 Cadillac CTS, which will come with an optional twin-turbo V-6 engine from General Motors.
