The hit PBS crime flick "Sherlock" has just finished airing its fourth season, but not the series. As there have been countless speculations that "Sherlock" season 4 will serve as the series finale, showrunners opened new hope among fans as they recently hinted on a possible season 5. They also shared in an interview what they would possibly insert in the show for the season 5's plot.
"Sherlock" has not yet been renewed for a new season, but like the fans, showrunners Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are also anticipating the return of the duo Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Following this, the creators revealed in an interview that they might leave the show with the ending of season 4 or they might do another conclusion. Either way, the duo said they are hoping to work on another "Sherlock" project.
In another interview, the Moffat has spoken about the supposed ending of season 4 which they tweaked, opening new possibilities for the major characters. While he admits they have closed the chapter well, he said that they only closed an idea but have not placed closure on the life of Sherlock and Watson. "It's not closure; it's closure of one idea. It's them realizing that they are always going to be in their flats or grinds," Moffat said in his talk with Vulture.
Following this, fans may want to keep their hopes for a new season as is, as the showrunner reveals he has more plans on his mind for the characters. "There's an element of 'The Greek Interpreter' that I think is really exciting...in our version of events Irene Adler is still out there," Moffat told in the same interview. He also said that such area will be a great point of interest for another season, but he is not yet sure whether they are going to push through with the idea or not.
Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch who plays Sherlock and Martin Freeman who plays Dr. Watson are reportedly busy with several projects at Marvel Studio. Earlier reports already said that "Sherlock" might be on hiatus for a while before doing season 5, following the schedule of the main characters. As for the actress Amanda Abbington who played the character, Mary Watson, she said that she would love to come back to reprise her role in a new season even if her role has already ended.
