Looks like Capcom got the message that fans weren't happy with their release of Street Fighter V. A recent press release indicated a huge drop in sales for Capcom, indicating that one of their biggest titles had severely underperformed last year.
According to Attack of the Fan Boy, Street Fighter V sold about 1.4 million copies by the end of March last year. That was then followed by numerous reports of fan complaints and online gameplay issues that by December 2016, Capcom had only sold 1.5 million copies in total. That's considered to be one big failure as Capcom was aiming to surpass the two million mark by the end of March.
According to the financial report that was released by Capcom, the possible reason why Street Fighter underperformed last year was because it was competing with another big title that was released around the same time, Monster Hunter X. Apparently, the titles that made most of the money last year were the re-releases of classic Resident Evil games as well as Dead Rising 4 and Monster Hunter Generations.
Fans of Street Fighter, however, will know that the main reason why Street Fighter V failed was because of the severe lack of features that the game had upon release. The issue was considered to be so big that Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada has even decided to delay his game in order to avoid Capcom's mistake of releasing Street Fighter V before it was ready.
Even with the bad reception, it looks like Street Fighter V is here to stay, with Capcom planning to add more and more features as the year trudges along. Reports have said that the company doesn't plan to release a Super Street Fighter V, assuring players that the base version of the game is all that they need to enjoy incoming material. Will fans eventually warm-up to SFV? Street Fighter V is currently available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
