"Grey's Anatomy" has nabbed the first spot on ABC's top performing shows again, hence earning its early renewal for season 14. The network has recently announced the veteran medical drama's new season along with the other TGIT dramas, "Scandal" and "How to Get Away With Murder." ABC's president then quickly expressed his desire to see the Alex-Meredith romance finally happening on season 14.
"Grey's Anatomy," featuring lead star Ellen Pompeo, has recently been picked up by ABC for the 14th season. It was renewed along with other Shondaland produced shows like "Scandal," headlined by Kerry Washington, and "How To Get Away with Murder" starred by Viola Davis. The full cast of "Grey's Anatomy" is expected to return, as the flee of Jerrika Hinton has not yet been confirmed.
"Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder continue to keep viewers on the edge of their seats and wanting more turns" ABC president Channing Dungey said as cited by TVLine. "I'm thrilled to bring back these shows and the OMG moments that come with them," she continued.
Although "Grey's Anatomy" has been on the network for 12 years now, fans still seem to get highly affected of the show's twists and turns as it still ranks as ABC's number one series among the 18-49 demographic. It also reportedly serves as the third best broadcast drama of the network, overall. Furthermore, "Grey's Anatomy's" midseason return recorded its most watched episode after two and a half years of telecast.
Meanwhile, Dungey recently spoke in an interview about his opinion about the upcoming season's plot. She said that Shonda Rhimes should do an exciting turn of events between Meredith and Alex to keep fans tuned in. She suggested that the two characters seem to invigorate the viewers, and most of them are requesting to see a romance building between them. Furthermore, she expressed her thoughts on additional characters coming into the show to give the series additional fun and energy without eliminating the original cast members.
However, EP Betsy Beers of "Grey's Anatomy" answered to this fan request, saying that Alex and Meredith might never become a couple. Actor Justin Chambers who plays the character Alex also said that his character is only like a brother to Meredith, hence a future romance might not materialize.
"Grey's Anatomy" season 13 is still to air its last two episodes, and more viewers are tuning in with almost nine million fans recorded per telecast. Meanwhile, the 14th season release is yet to be announced, but fans are expecting it again to premiere in September.
