Vitamins in general have been essential against many illnesses. Against flus and colds, normally people would think of Vitamin C. A study shows that Vitamin D can protect against flus and colds as well.
Many people know the antioxidant benefits of Vitamin C. It has been shown to be affective as well in protecting against flus and colds. Vitamin D is not usually known to be one used against flus and colds. Researchers from the Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) have shown that Vitamin D can be effective against them as well.
Vitamin D is more known to be effective in bone and muscle health. An analysis of data taken from 11,000 participants from 25 clinical tests has shown Vitamin D can have an effect against respiratory infections. The participants come from 14 countries including the US and UK.
While there is much promise for Vitamin D, the trials have also shown conflicting results. Lead researcher Professor Adrian Martineau has said that the study has allowed them to see why Vitamin D has worked in many cases but not in others. The study so far has shown that Vitamin D is effective if given daily and in regular doses.
Martineau has noted that many food are now fortified with Vitamin D, which has lessened Vitamin D deficiency in many people. The study has shown that Vitamin D fortification in food should be made stronger, according to the Queen Mary University of London's site. This will make Vitamin D even more effective against common illnesses like colds and flus.
Daily or weekly intake of Vitamin D supplements has reduced the risk of respiratory infection. This was mostly seen in those with low volumes of Vitamin D. The study did note that even those who have Vitamin D supplement still benefited from additional intake, according to Science Daily.
Vitamin D supplement is generally safe and effective. Most doctors still advice though to take vitamins in moderation, as there are some which can have effects if taken beyond the prescribed amount. Still, Vitamin D is largely seen as cost effective.
Vitamin D is important to bone and muscle health. Now it has a new benefit, as Vitamin D can protect against flus and colds. Vitamin B is found to be effective against schizophrenia as well.
