However, it has been long since the author has made an update on the sequel of the fifth installment, thus leaving the creators of the show to create their own timeline. According to the author, he honestly said that he is not done yet although he has made some progress on the book already. He also admitted that a year ago, he intended to have released it already, but he was wrong on that. Thus, when Martin said that "Winds of Winter" will most likely be released this year, he is not making any promises. This has then led to the speculations that Martin will release the book on his 70th birthday on September 20, 2018.
It has been speculated that Martin will release "Winds of Winter" by then as a way for him to show gratitude to his millions of fans who have supported him all these years. However, since this hasn't been confirmed, it is still possible that he could release the book before 2017 ends. After admitting that he has done hundreds of pages already, the fans have remained hopeful on the possibility of getting the book within this year.
