As Hollywood’s biggest night approaches, some critics and netizens are all buzzed up with “La La Land” getting the Oscar for Best Picture, the top plum in the annual ceremony which has celebrated film artistry for the past 89 years. The film has recorded the most number of Oscar nominations.
However, the biggest threat to its expected grand sweep on Sunday is “Moonlight,” a smaller indie film about a black man in three stages of his life.
No Oscar For Ryan Gosling?
La La Land stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Dubbed as this year’s biggest contender at the Oscars, ballots cast are predicted to have favored La La Land for its outstanding technicals. Yet, the movie might miss one important award for Ryan Gosling as Best Actor.
Gosling, who rose to global fame after starring in “The Notebook,” is nominated alongside Casey Affleck and Denzel Washington, already a multiple Oscar winner.
La La Land’s Win A Disaster For Hollywood?
Writer David Cox has openly criticized the film, saying that it is for “narcissists” and “humorless” moviegoers. Furthermore, he predicted that the movie’s looming Oscars sweep will definitely be a disaster for Hollywood. Moreover, some critics even condemned the film for being too white.
Angela Parrish: Real-Life Journey To La La Land
Perhaps, musician Angela Parrish will be one of the millions who will root for La La Land to win as Best Picture. The voice of the 30-year-old singer is first heard in the film’s opening scene from the ramp connecting 110 freeway to the 105. She also shared that her story from playing piano in a Studio City restaurant to singing "Another Day of Sun" is similar to the stories of Stone and Gosling.
Whatever the outcome of the Oscars on Sunday night may be, it is undeniable that La La Land is continuously garnering success in the box-office. In China, local internet provider Tencent has partnered with Lionsgate for the release of La La Land in local theaters.
