Xbox 720 News: Console Name Allegedly Confirmed

As the Xbox 720 release date approaches — likely to occur May 21 at a Microsoft event — speculation surrounding the official name for the next-generation console is mounting.

The Xbox 720, internally code-named Durango, has been rumored to have a number of monikers — most recently Xbox Infinity and Xbox Fusion. An early leaked logo suggested the Xbox 720 might simply be called Xbox.

Last week, inentertainment published a report indicating that Xbox Fusion was the likely name for the new console, writing:

"If you run a WhoIS search for Xbox Fusion and Xbox Infinity domain names you will notice one fact that clearly points to the official Next Xbox name. XboxFusion.co.uk, XboxFusion.de, XboxFusion.biz, XboxFusion.info and XboxFusion.com are all registered by the Microsoft Corporation, hosted on the MSFT.NET name servers and redirect to Xbox.com. None of the Xbox Infinity domains so this."

A new report from IB Times UK however, suggests that the Xbox Infinity moniker is still in play.

Xbox 720 News: Latest Console Name Rumors:

IB Times UK claims that "Sources related to development of the new Xbox have confirmed to IBTimes UK that the console, which is scheduled to be launched on 21 May, will be called Infinity."

Take this new Xbox 720 news with a grain of salt. Anonymous and unquoted sources in this age of uncredited report citations are always suspect.

IB Times states that it attempted to confirm the console name with Microsoft, which obviously declined to comment.

While the Xbox 720 rumors surrounding the Infinity title have gained more credence lately after a new graphic leaked with an official-looking banner for the Xbox Infinity, it should be noted that a number of observers have pointed out the letters do not appear in a straight line, and consequently the image is probably not official.
