Pizza Smell On A DVD: How Does It Work? (Video)

There's no question that the pizza industry has been baking up some pretty wacky ideas as of late, whether it's specialized toppings most people would never even consider putting on their pizzas (let alone eating) or Pizza Hut's recent Crazy Cheese Crust Pizza, we clearly can't get enough of those pizza innovations.

But one company in particular has really gone wild with its latest innovation, by taking to tech. Domino's Pizza Brazil has rolled out "pizza DVDs" that -- through the magic of smell-o-vision - actually emanate the warm redolence of a piping hot pizza.

Those cineastes who might remember the last few smell-o-vision experiments by the likes of cult film hero John Waters, Rugrats Go Wild or even the stinky Revenge of the Nerds fourth installment haven't smelled anything yet.

Unlike these earlier entries into the realm of smelling through at home entertainment, the pizza DVDs from Domino's Brazil actually emanate their pizza smell from the DVDs and DVD player themselves, as opposed to a scratch-n-sniff card that comes with the DVDs.

According to Designtaxi, the pizza DVDs create their smell via a thermal ink that mixes with the heat of the DVD player in order to fill your living room with the unmistakable aroma of a steaming, melted cheese-covered pizza pie.

The DVDs even create a smell of mouth-watering pepperoni, too.

Even more astounding is the fact that the pizza DVDs don't actually show images of pizza, but are actually a variant of DVDs showing popular recent films such as Argo and The Dark Knight Rises.

The special pizza-smelling varnish has been applied to these DVDs, which are distributed at rental shops in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Once the film is over, the DVD -- which was at first black -- now comes out of your player (if you still have one in lieu of just streaming) with an image of a pizza on it, and the scent of the scintillating pizza comes forth thereafter.

Last month, Domino's rival Pizza Hut established a partnership with Xbox 360, allowing gamers to pause their play in order to order pizza directly from their console.

This certainly brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "pizza home delivery."
