HMD Global, the company that's revived the Nokia name on smartphones, has so far unleashed a handful of entry-level and mid-range phones. Reportedly, it is set to launch the Nokia 9, a top-end Android smartphone, which could be positioned to compete with the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8 this year.
Samsung Galaxy S8 And S8 Plus
The Samsung Galaxy S8 features a 5.8-inch QHD Super AMOLED display while the Galaxy S8 Plus sports a 6.2-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display. Both Samsung powerhouse smartphones come with a 12-megapixel "Dual Pixel" rear camera with optical image stabilization and 8-megapixel front camera with autofocus. The Galaxy S8 is powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 835 SoC in the US, and Exynos 8895 SoC for international. Both come with 4GB of RAM and with 64GB of inbuilt storage. Moreover, the devices support expandable storage via microSD card up to 256GB. The price is expected to be between $750-$850 depending on the variant.
Nokia 9
The upcoming Nokia 9 features A 5.5-inch QHD OLED screen and said to powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor, coupled with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The Nokia 9 is said to sport a 22-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 12-megapixel front snapper for selfies. Under the hood is a 3800mAh battery. The latest Nokia device is reported to be water resistant and comes with Quick Charge 4 support, Zeiss optics, an iris scanner, fingerprint scanner and comes with three capture spatial 360 audio, and those with two capture spatial audio. Its possible price could be around $699.
Apple iPhone 8
This year, Apple will mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone and the company could make a major upgrade to its iPhone lineup. The iPhone 8 is expected to come powered with a new and A11 processor and M11 motion-coprocessor coupled with 3GB or 4GB of RAM. Apple is reported experimenting with a "glass sandwich design". Apple's iPhone 8 could also come with a "revolutionary" front-facing camera with an infrared module which has 3D capabilities that could enable augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) features in apps as well as better security. Possible price is between $850-$900.
The Verdict
Apple iPhone 8 offers a compelling experience while not all of Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus features are vital to the daily usage needs of all users. Clearly, Nokia 9 is as almost as premium as the two but offers great quality and performance at a lesser price.
