There was a period in time when no one was sure whether the next OnePlus smartphone would be called the OnePlus 4 or the OnePlus 5. Today, thanks to a leak found by Roland Quandt of WinFuture, the device will now be known as the OnePlus 5.
Baptizing devices with easy-to-remember names is vital to a device. A good quality moniker helps stir name recall and increase sales. The Chinese company started with the OnePlus One followed by OnePlus 2 and then the OnePlus 3. The next logical step is to call the upcoming flagship smartphone OnePlus 4. That is not happening, however.
The new device, as reported by The Christian Post, will be dubbed the OnePlus 5. Quandt discovered a listing on the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology which showed that the device model is called the OnePlus A5000. There are a couple of hints that this means a OnePlus 5 is in the offing. First, the company's previous devices went with model numbers A2000 for the OnePlus 2 and A3000 for the OnePlus 3. Next, the Chinese believe that the number 4 is unlucky and thus unlikely to be used for their next device.
The OnePlus 5 has been rumored for quite some time now but it only made so much noise after Evan Blass, one of the more prolific leakers around, shared an image of a wallpaper featuring the phrase "Never Settle", the signature tagline of OnePlus. The image, which was leaked early in March, did not present anything concrete about the rumored smartphone except that the device will probably come in jet black or matte black finish.
Things have gone up more than a notch since then. One of the latest rumors about the upcoming OnePlus 5 divulged its potential specifications. GSM Arena posted a list of what it describes as "unofficial preliminary specifications".
The most prominent rumored features of the OnePlus 5 are its display, platform, and memory. The device will sport a 5.5-inch optic AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 16M colors, 1440 x 2560 pixels for a 534-pixel density, and Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It will be powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 835 chipset and will come with Android Nougat 7.1.1 out of the box. The OnePlus 5 will come in 6GB and 8GB of RAM while its storage will be 64GB, 128Gb, and 256GB.
Another awesome feature of the OnePlus 5 is its rumored 23-megapixel primary camera with phase detection focus. Its secondary camera is also impressive at 16 MP. Additionally, the upcoming OnePlus device will have a front-mounted fingerprint sensor, a traditional 3.5mm jack, and a non-removable 3000 mAh battery.
