Fire Emblem Echoes deviates itself from the previous two mainline games in the series with new mechanics, features and a spike in difficulty. Here are some tips for fans who are looking into the game.
Echoes is the latest game in the FE series that focuses on Celica and Alm on their journey for peace. Players must take to the harsh battlefields and fight plenty of strong enemies and survive in grueling environments. Despite being a remake, the game's directors are adamant that this title will be something fresh for Western players, as per Polygon.
In line with this, Fire Emblem Echoes' formula has been changed from the standard one found in previous titles. The game expands on the narrative while making some significant changes in terms of combat. Because of this, Kotaku shares some tips for both new and returning players to the franchise.
Firstly, players should choose their difficulty wisely. FE is known for its permadeath, but the game allows players to use that feature or not. Players should also make the most out of Mila's Turnwheel - a magical item that allows players to reverse time and repeat a certain turn. Keep in mind that there is only a number of times players can use the feature, but it can be expanded by finding cogs in the overworld.
One tip in combat is to always be patient as it can be tempting to rush battles. However, charging ahead could easily lead to dead units, so positioning and timing are the keys to victory. In line with this, players should also make use of the terrain as tiles with forests or ruins can provide additional defense and evasion that can mean the difference between life and death.
Players can also press X to reveal all the panels where the enemy can attack. If a unit is standing on one of the said tiles, they're susceptible to getting hit on the next turn. Fans should also prioritize on killing cantors first as it can summon a large pool of minions in battle. Luckily, killing the main source wipes out all of the remaining helpers too.
Fire Emblem Echoes presents a new challenge for players in the franchise. It also marks a new direction for the series that it might decide to follow up on in future installments. Those who want to play the tactical RPG can get a copy for the 3DS.
