2014 Chevrolet SS price set at $44,470

Chevrolet has announced pricing for the 2014 SS at $44,470, which includes a $995 destination charge. The price tag doesn't include the gas-guzzler tax that will be tacked on, so the full cost of the 2014 Chevy SS is not yet known.

In spite of its hefty price tag, the 2014 Chevy SS occupies a unique segment of the market. It is a rear-wheel drive V8 and most of its main competitors sell for slightly higher prices. The Chrysler 300 SRT starts at $47,240, while the Dodge Charger SRT is around $45,270 for a comparably equipped model.

"The all-new SS is engineered for performance enthusiasts who've been clamoring for a rear-wheel-drive sedan," said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. "Adding the SS to the lineup further solidifies Chevrolet's position as America's best-selling performance-car brand that also includes the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray and Camaro Z/28."

The new SS will be imported from GM's manufacturing plant in Australia and will use the same platform as the Camaro, as well as Holden's VF Commodore, which is Australia's version of the SS.

As far as specs go, the 2014 SS has a serious powerhouse under the hood. The sedan packs a 6.2-liter V8 engine that generates a more-than respectable 415 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. of torque to match. It's got a six speed transmission and will do 0-60 in about 5 seconds.

While the new SS is far from an economy sedan, owners will be gratified to know that $44,470 buys just about everything that comes offered for the car. Only two options are available, one of which is a $900 sunroof and the other is just a spare tire for $500.

GM has been pretty conservative as far as sales estimates for the 2014 Chevy SS are concerned. GM North America President Mark Reuss said in January that the company would be pleased to sell 3,000 to 5,000 units annually.
