According to the latest rumors, the Apple VR/AR headset is entering production this fall. This comes after previous reports that it passed the production testing phase.
Apple VR/AR Headset Leak Reveals Production Schedule
The report about Apple's fall production of its VR/AR headset came from DigiTimes Asia and was cited by MacRumors, noting that it will start in August-September. Before this announcement, the Taiwanese news site previously said that Apple's headset passed its production testing.
DigiTimes Asia highlighted that "Apple's first AR headset, mainly targeting professional vertical market applications, is expected to undergo EVT3 soon and enter volume production in August-September before hitting the market by the end of the year, the sources said."
This new Apple headset leak bumped off the speculation from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who said that the production challenges of the headgear will affect this year's launch. He stated that a 2023 introduction is more possible.
Additionally, the tech giant reportedly plans to release a new version of its VR/AR headset in 2023 that is lighter, has a better battery and is more affordable.
Apple VR/AR Headset Specs and Features
For those curious to know more about the first Apple headset, Tom's Guide reported that the major feature of this device is mixed reality.
Gurman also claimed (per Tom's Guide) that the headgear will have external cameras, which are presently being used to test functions like hand-tracking and gesture control. Additionally, it is possible to use a virtual keyboard to type in the air if the development works out as intended.
In addition to this, The Information also expects the headgear to include 12 tracking cameras that can send data to two 8K monitors in front of the users' eyes.
Amusingly, the headgear could also feature LiDAR sensors. However, Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) disputes this assertion, claiming that Sony is producing 4K 4000 x 4000 panels with a 1.4-inch diagonal for Apple's headgear.
In terms of the OS that will be used, Tom's Guide added that this device will have what is being called realityOS. It is worth noting that there isn't much information on this rumored software, but it would make sense for Apple to create a unique operating system for its VR/AR device.
Apple Headset Release Date and Price
With regards to the Apple VR/AR headset price, MacRumors reported that it may cost more than $3,000, explaining that the headgear is a niche product targeted for developers and high-end professionals.
It is also still expected to release this 2022, though there is no official confirmation yet.
