Rejoice, future Cybertruck owners!
Tesla will not be suing Cybertruck owners for reselling their electric trucks within a year of purchase.
The EV automaker removed the clause from the US order agreement stating Cybertruck owners could get sued up to $50,000 and get banned from buying other Tesla cars. The original version of the clause can still be accessed on Internet Archives.
According to the agreement, "Tesla may seek injunctive relief to prevent the transfer of title of the Vehicle or demand liquidated damages."
Before the changes, immediate reselling can only be done with direct approval from Tesla.
Many people took it to X (formerly Twitter) to air their grievances to Tesla and its owner, Elon Musk.
Tesla Car Reselling Policies, Controversies, and Issues
This was not the first time Tesla threatened its customers from reselling their cars.
People have reportedly received messages from the Tesla Loss Prevention Team for selling their cars soon after purchase as this is "in violation of our reseller policy."
Resellers caught will have their remaining orders canceled and be "added to our do not sell list."
Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said Tesla's resale clause is a "guardrail" from possible supply-demand issues from a vehicle difficult to build, according to a Bloomberg interview.
It can be noted that other automakers like Ferrari, Ford, and Porsche have had similar anti-reseller clauses before to prevent scalping rare or expensive rides.
Tesla Cybertruck: The Long-awaited Promise
Tesla's Cybertruck was initially introduced back in 2019 as the first electric pickup truck, priced at an enormous $39,000 tag.
The "Blade Runner-inspired" EV is set to hit the streets on Nov. 30 at Tesla's Gigafactory, years after repeated delays and production issues. Mass production, however, will not begin until 2024.
Cybertruck's specs have also been leaked online ahead of its release, in which the truck is detailed as capable of holding 11,000 pounds in total, much less than the promised 14,000 in 2019.
