The year 2023 has seen a ton of mobile apps. In fact, Google Play Store recorded over 3.718 million apps launched in its platform for this year alone. Some were good, many were flops.
Despite the number, only a few are worthy to be called "the best." So, here are five breakout mobile apps released in 2023:
1. Threads
Of course, the Twitter competitor will be here. Meta's answer to the Twitter exodus after Elon Musk bought the app can still be considered a good Twitter alternative.
For starters, it does not limit users within a 280-character limit and better image quality retention. Most of all, it has far fewer bots and annoying checkmark buyers loitering in the comment section.
Despite its flaws during launch, Meta has made several improvements to the app to make it more enjoyable for a wider range of audience. A web version is now also available.
2. Honkai: Stair Rail
From the creators of Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3rd, Honkai: Star Rail is a refreshing open-world turn-based RPG with great visuals and a solid story.
Hoyoverse introduces another lore-rich world filled with a memorable cast and an intriguing mystery slowly revealed in each chapter.
Players take on the role of the nameless Trailblazer and explore the vast universe aboard the Astral Express to save various worlds from the great disaster. The app is available on both Play Store and App Store.
3. Procreate Dream
The only paid app in the list. Procreate Dream is the culmination of Procreate's progress since it launched its first version in 2014.
Good for professionals and hobbyists, the app lets users bring their imagination to life with an all-new animation feature to help create powerful 2D and 3D animation, and motion graphics.
This is on top of the app's amazing selection of tools for digital illustration, coloring, and sketching.
Like other Procreate apps, Procreate Dream is a one-time purchase app for $19.99 only at the Apple App Store. The app has no monthly payments and live service subscriptions, meaning all current and future updates will be free for existing users.
4. K Manga
"Attack on Titan" and "Noragami" manga publisher Kodansha has launched its own mobile in the US this year.
K Manga offers a wide list of popular manga titles, many of which are adapted to anime, for readers to enjoy.
New chapters of ongoing series are simultaneously released in Japan for free. The app has similar features with the popular comic app WebComics when accessing its free version.
5. Grand Theft Auto Trilogy: Definitive Edition
The classic trilogy of the popular Grand Theft Auto series will soon be available on mobile in partnership with Netflix's gaming wing.
It may not have released yet at the time of writing, but we felt to include it since GTA games always generate hype.
This means if you have an existing Netflix subscription, you can access all three games for free.
The remastered version will include Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
