The Fallout franchise has predictably had an uptick in players ever since Amazon's live-action adaptation hit the small screen. It was the perfect time to release a next-gen update, but it seems that it won't be free for some people who have already acquired the game.
Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update on PS Plus
It has been almost a decade since the post-apocalyptic video game was released, and it is not getting a next-gen update to match the capabilities of the latest PCs and consoles. However, if you want to experience the enhanced gameplay it offers, you might have to pony up $20.
The free update works fine in other purchases. For instance, if you bought the disc or digital version of Fallout 4 for PS4, all you have to do is select the free upgrade option, and you will have no problems. The same goes for players who got it from the Xbox Game Pass.
However, if you bought Fallout 4 through a PS Plus subscription, you won't have the option to get the next-gen upgrade for free. It certainly is unusual, especially for paid subscribers, given that the game is also included in the list of free games in the PS Plus Extra library.
Rockstar Games content creator Videotechuk posted on X saying that he already owned the game through PS Plus years ago for free, and was not eligible for the free update. Another user responded by saying that the upgrade might only work if the player paid for the game.
The bad news is that there's is no other choice but to pay if you want to play it right now. The good news is that Bethesda is reportedly fixing the issue, as reported by Kotaku. An admin in a Discord server dedicated to the game said that they are "checking on the PS Plus update."
If you intend to get the next-gen upgrade, you might wait a little while longer to see if Bethesda really is going to resolve the PS Plus issue, although since there is no timeframe provided, it's unknown how long that wait will be.
Next-Gen Update Release
The upgrade just rolled out yesterday and the number of complaints regarding the paid update just shows that a lot of people are already installing it. It will be available for platforms like PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
The new native version of Fallout 4, which is 1.000.001, will be 56.503 GB in size. For PC players, the update will unfortunately not be able to read mods, although it is only temporarily available, as per IGN, which means that Bethesda is already working on it.
The Fallout 4 next-gen upgrade will come with a lot of enhancements for gameplay. It features Performance mode and Quality mode settings, along with stability improvements, and fixes, and can be played up to 60 FPS with an increased resolution.
For PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users, the update will provide login and stability improvements, as well as quest fixes. The widescreen and ultra-widescreen support is only available for PC users, who will be getting quest updates and fixes for the Creation Kit.
