It's safe to say that Netflix has been pretty busy with all the upcoming new seasons from existing shows, as well as new ones that are set to be developed or released. In fact, the streaming giant is working on one IP that you may already be familiar with, Minecraft.
Minecraft Series on Netflix
The official announcement came as a 20-second trailer, but we already know what to expect. The series has been a long time coming given that a lot of video games have been getting adaptations lately, and Minecraft is the game with the most sold copies of all time.
With its release in 2009, the game is celebrating its 15th anniversary, and the animated series is part of Mojang Studios' way of celebrating that fact. It will be developed by the studio Wildbrain, who was behind popular titles like "Carmen Sandiego" and "Sonic Prime", as per Engadget.
As for the story, the companies revealed that it will follow an original story, which will be based on new characters and will show "the world of Minecraft in a new light." That's all we get for now, but all parties will likely release trailers along the way.
It's unknown if we will be meeting the main playable character, Steve, but we will likely see familiar characters that we already see in the game universe like Creepers, Zombies, Skeletons, and maybe even major NPCs like the Ender Dragon.
Netflix's Other Game Collaboration
This isn't even the first time Netflix has collaborated with a popular game. Arguably a competitor to Minecraft, Roblox has introduced Nextworld, which comes with various 3D interactive spaces based on popular Netflix shows like "Stranger Things" and "One Piece."
Upon entering Nextworld, players can participate in a digital theme park where they will see characters from the mentioned franchises like Dustin from "Stranger Things" or Jimmy from "Rebel Moon," as well as easter eggs and games.
For playing, participants can enter mini-games like Is It Cake? or join the Cobra Kai Miyagi-Do Balancing Board. Throughout Nextworld, players can gather the collectibles they acquired and use them to decorate their Fan Pod.
Players can even head to the home base in Nextworld called the Streamship, which provides users with social features where they can attend events such as viewing parties, wherein the ship will show premieres and daily content bites.
'Minecraft: The Movie'
There's still a lot of certainty about the live-action adaptation, especially given that it has gone through so many delays. However, there are already cast members for the film such as Jack Black and Jason Momoa, so it's definitely progressing.
IMDb mentioned that the film will be about the malevolent Ender Dragon setting out on a path of destruction, and a young woman along with her group would set out to save the Overworld. It has already finished filming, so it looks like things are moving according to schedule.
"Minecraft: The Movie" is set to be released in April 2025, and we will be seeing other actors like Kate McKinnon, Danielle Brooks, Jemaine Clement, Emma Meyers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. All that's left now is to wait for a trailer.
