Pokemon Fan Convention Faces Backlash After Failing to Meet Expectations

A Pokeverse event that was held in the Philippines became viral as the fan convention failed to live up to its promises to the fans.

Some of the fans were quick to see some similarities between the catastrophe of the Willy Wonka Experience and the Fyre Festival.

Pokeverse Receives Harsh Criticism for Failed Event

The official website of the event described the convention as "the premier Pokemon-themed expo in the Philippines made by fans for fans." The event promised an event full of official merchandise, trainer quests, cosplay contests, tournaments, musical performances, and more.

According to the attendees, the ribbon cutting for the convention started late. Upon arriving, they were met with large open areas that were supposed to be a space for game-themed activities.

A suspicious 'Ravioli Man' was also spotted at the event. The man was seen eating a sauce from a ravioli jar and smelled a lot while children were running around the space. The man was eventually escorted out of the premises but was able to get in again.

Pokeverse Accused of Misleading Fans

In an X post, Pokemon fan and cartoonist BintuRita claimed that the event was "extremely downsized." Some of the activities were used as a promotion for companies that are unrelated to the game.

The second day of the event was far from getting better. The cosplayers were left with no choice but to change on a resting area which was filled with bean bags.

The event was held at the SM Megamall, Megatrade Hall from May 31 to June 2. The standard ticket price for a 1-day pass was $17 (P1,000) while the VIP 3-day pass was offered for $255 (P15,000).

Several fans believed that the majority of the cost went to the special appearances of Veronica Taylor, Ash Ketchum's voice actress, and Jason Paige, singer of the anime theme song. However, Taylor revealed that she was not compensated for her participation.
