Apple's WWDC 2024 brought forth a lot of exciting news for Apple users, most of which are centered around the company's long-awaited utilization of AI. All of the new features are meant to make the user's life easier, and that includes taking notes during a call that can be recorded.
iOS 18 Recorded and Transcribed Calls
Previously, the best we could do to take down notes during a call was to type them during the conversation or write the information down. With the new feature coming to iOS 18, users will have the option to record the calls.
Thanks to Apple Intelligence, or the tech giant's version of the acronym AI, the recording can then be transcribed and even summarized. For the sake of privacy, the person at the other end of the call will be notified once the user decides to start recording.
Will the update, calls will now have an additional button that users can press to record. When active, the screen will display a soundwave just above the call buttons as well as an indication of how long the recording has been going on, as mentioned in The Verge.
The transcription can be found in the Notes app, which is where the summarization becomes an option. This feature, however, can only be used with languages like English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, and Portuguese.
It can be useful and many ways and users won't have to rely on third-party apps and devices to do so. Journalists can record their interviews through the call and people can read the transcription when they are provided complex instructions that may be hard to remember.
Using New Notes App Features
With the transcription, users can add audio sessions within their notes and generate live audio transcription with that as well. The notes can be combined with comments, checklists, and documents to make them more informative or interactive.
There are even automated features that allow for calculating expenses right in the Notes app. All users have to do is enter an expression in between the designated expenses and the app will automatically calculate it.
If the transcription is already running long, users can divide them into sections, which can then be collapsed to get to other topics quicker. Texts can also be made to stand out by highlighting them so that they may be easier to find.
When Will iOS 18 Be Released?
Sadly, there are no definite dates for the release yet, but it is confirmed to be arriving later this year. Only select iPhone models will be able to download the update, particularly from the second-generation iPhone SE up to the iPhone 15 series.
The upcoming iOS 18 is not just focused on AI features as well, as there are many new apps and functions that will improve various tasks. Some of the additions include the Passwords app, the customization of the Home Screen, scheduled messages, and many more.
