PlayStation 5 players can soon join Discord calls directly from their consoles even while playing with the latest collaboration between the two gaming platforms.
PlayStation unveiled the partnership on Thursday with the integration of Discord voice chats on PS5 "to introduce more ways for players to connect with their friends."
This will be in addition to a shareable PlayStation Network account players can use to easily connect with other gamers via mobile.
The integration features are expected to first roll out in Japan with Europe, Australia/ New Zealand, the Middle East, and finally the Americas receiving the updates in the next few weeks.
PlayStation has teased the idea of integrating its consoles into Discord since 2021, so it is a surprise for many that the company has finally fulfilled one of its promises.
The partnership follows shortly after Discord announced plans to refocus the platform back to the gaming community and help "people deepen their friendships around games and shared interests."
How to Connect to Discord via PS5?
For PS5 players to join Discord voice chats directly, they first need to connect their PSN Networks to Discord by going to User Settings > Connections > Add, and then selecting the PlayStation logo.
Users can do the same on their PS5 consoles by opening the control center for "Users and Accounts" and accessing the Discord menu on the Game Base.
Both options will allow users to choose whether to display their existing Discord profiles or the PSN account.
Once complete, PS5 players can now access the Discord tab in the Game Base to all the group servers and DMs connected.
PlayStation Network Still Regional-Locked
While the integration of PlayStation Network may still be a much-needed improvement to all PS5 owners and Discord accounts, PSN remains region-locked to many countries outside of North America and Japan.
The PSN's availability was even highlighted in the Helldivers 2 fiasco as 177 countries were suddenly locked out of the game after PlayStation started requiring players to link their Steam accounts to PSN.
Although PlayStation later revoked the requirements, Helldivers 2 remains inaccessible in the countries where the PSN is unavailable.
