'Squid Game' on Netflix: 4 Unforgettable Characters That Defined Season 1

Netflix released "Squid Game" in 2021 which quickly gained recognition among its subscribers due to its impeccable premise and plot twists. The series was applauded for its social commentary that was represented by each character.

Three years since the first season aired, the much-awaited Season 2 is finally coming before 2024 ends. However, the majority of the characters are already dead due to the template of the game itself.

The upcoming seasons are months away from happening. This is the right time to revisit some of the most unforgettable characters from "Squid Game" Season 1 and hope that they will have a surprise cameo for the next seasons.

Seong Gi-hun

Also known as Player 456, Gi-hun is the winner of the 33rd Squid Game contest in 2020. His backstory revealed that he was a former gambling addict who struggled to provide for her daughter's and mother's needs.

Despite winning a huge amount of prize money, Gi-hun became traumatized by the events of the game. He even saw his best friend's death at the final stage of the game.

Viewers were as shocked as Gi-hun when it was revealed that Oh Il-nam, known as player 001 is the founder of the game. Gi-hun vowed to take revenge on the ultra-rich people who benefitted from the game, which is expected to be the focus of the next two seasons.

Oh Il-nam

Il-nam was the oldest player in the game and was introduced as player 001, signifying that he was the first player who supposedly got recruited. The finale of Season 1 revealed that he was the creator of the Squid Games and devoted the game to entertaining rich people like himself.

He decided to participate in the game as he already knew that he was nearing the end of his life. Gi-hun became fond of him and formed a special bond which eventually hurt the latter at the end.

Kang Sae-byeok

Sae-byeok is considered the breakout role for Jung Ho-yeon as the role boosted her acting career. She was introduced as player 067 and was playing to get enough money to reunite with her family after defecting to South Korea.

She managed to survive the first five games and formed a special alliance with Gi-hun. However, she was emotionally hurt after Ji-yeong's dramatic death at the fourth game.

Sae-byeok entrusted her brother to Gi-hun and met her demise before the start of the sixth game.

Hwang Jun-ho

Jun-ho is one of the characters that exists outside the game. As a police detective, he investigated the Squid Game by disguising himself as a worker. He is also on the look for his missing brother, whom he believes participated in the game.

He was shot by the Front Man, who is surprisingly his missing brother. The status of his character remains unknown. Some fans are hoping that he is still alive and will work with Gi-hun to take down the mysterious organization.
