Apple Pay’s Tap to Provision Feature Disabled on iOS 18 Beta—Gearing Up for Public Release?

The feature introduced in Apple Pay's iOS 18 version known as "Tap to Provision" is currently unavailable for users with reports claiming that the company has disabled it. No official explanation, as of press time, has been provided.

The disabling of the feature takes place before the anticipated Apple September fall event known as "It's Glowtime." The public release of the iOS 18 is expected to be officially unveiled during this event.

Apple Pay's Tap to Provision feature is currently unavailable for users on the iOS 18 or iOS 18.1 beta. According to code analyst Aaron Perris (via X), this feature is currently disabled on the iPhone operating system's backend.

The Tap to Provision feature allows users to add a credit or debit card to their Apple Pay accounts via the Wallet app by simply tapping the card on the iPhone.

This feature shows off the iPhone's NFC technology, which foregoes the need to take a picture of the card or enter the details manually. However, it is important to note that only NFC-enabled cards are compatible with this feature.

Is Apple Gearing Up for iOS 18's Upcoming Public Release?

According to 9to5Mac, this iOS 18 feature previously found in the beta has not worked for all NFC-enabled cards, and only a few have been scanned by the iPhone to add to the Wallet. It has been reported that this feature was pulled out by Apple as the company is said to be improving it even more.

It is also being speculated that, with the iOS 18's public release expected to happen soon, Apple may have pulled out the feature in preparation for roll out. The feature is expected to return with better compatibility.

Apple and What the iOS 18 Offers

The WWDC 2024 event last June gave the world a preview of what is in store for Apple, including the "biggest update ever" to its iPhone operating system, iOS 18. Rumors and speculations have pointed towards the iOS 18 getting a number of artificial intelligence (AI) features, such as the Apple Intelligence, the first foray of the Cupertino-based tech giant into generative AI.

Among the many reported features of iOS 18 are improved home customization features, a dedicated password manager, AI-generated emojis, app customization, and more. Users in the beta were able to get first-hand experience of the trial and error done by Apple in their latest system as they got to explore what more iPhones have to offer.

In addition to this, apps like Safari, Apple Music, Notes, Apple Pay, iMessage, and more have seen upgrades that will be featured as part of the iOS 18.

Now that Apple is inching closer to its next-gen smartphones, many are also expecting iOS 18's public release, which may be available in a few days or week after the upcoming fall event.
