Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 leaks again, but with different specs

The purported Samsung Galaxy Mega has leaked online again, but this time with slightly different specifications than previously rumored.

It's no big secret that the whole trend of large-screen phones that look more like tablets can be attributed to Samsung. The South Korean company has increasingly blurred the lines between smartphones and tablets and consistently pushed the limits in terms of size. Last year, Samsung launched its biggest phablets to date - the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and the Galaxy Mega 6.3.

The company is expected to launch a successor to its Galaxy Mega series this year, and the upcoming phablet is rumored to arrive shortly as the Galaxy Mega 2. A new leak now brings more details regarding the upcoming device, but it's arguably different from what we've heard before.

Just recently, we reported that the purported Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 dropped by the TENAA, which is the Chinese equivalent of the FCC. The TENAA certification revealed at the time that the handset would boast a massive 6-inch screen with an HD 720p resolution and pack a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.2GHz, paired with 2GB of RAM. Other specs included 8GB of internal storage capacity, microSD card support for additional memory, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front shooter.

The latest leak, meanwhile, comes from GSMArena and paints a different picture. The display remains the same at 6 inches and 720p resolution, but the processor now appears as a Pega Pro quad-core chip clocked at 1.5GHz and paired with 1.5GB of RAM. Downgrades appear to affect the camera department as well, as this new image (see above) reveals an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2.1-megapixel front shooter. The internal storage capacity, however, seems to be double than previously rumored, now listed as 16GB.

The new leak may turn out to be just a hoax, but there could also be a reasonable explanation for this discrepancy in leaked specifications. Samsung usually tries out two or more variants of a device, packing slightly different specifications depending on region.

On the other hand, it all remains in the rumor state at this point, which means that nothing is for certain just yet. Nevertheless, if Samsung does indeed plan to launch a Galaxy Mega 2 device soon, it might do so at the upcoming IFA 2014 trade show in Berlin in early September. We'll keep you in the loop as soon as more details emerge, so stay tuned. In the meantime, take all leaks and rumors with a grain of salt.
