iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus weekend sales break new records, marking Apple’s ‘best launch ever’

Apple's latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus continue to generate impressive sales, as the company has just announced record weekend sales.

The new-generation iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are among the hottest devices of this year and the high anticipation that built up ahead of their announcement, combined with the handsets' great improvements, have led to record-breaking sales.

Just last week, Apple announced that it sold a record 4 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units within the first 24 hours of availability, on launch day. As a reminder, the handsets made their official debut on Sept. 9, went up for pre-order on Sept. 12, and hit commercial availability on Sept. 19.

Apple typically releases new products on a Friday in order to give customers a full weekend to play around with the latest gadgets, and first weekend sales usually mirror great demand. With the weekend now over, Apple has now announced that it managed to set new records with this weekend's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales.

"Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn't be happier," Apple CEO Tim Cook boasts in a new press release on Monday, Sept. 22. "We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible."

According to the company, it has already sold more than 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units during the weekend. The figure represents the total amount from combined sales in the U.S., the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, France, Puerto Rico, and Singapore.

Cook further pointed out that Apple could have sold even more iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones if it weren't for the supply issues the company is trying to overcome. More specifically, demand for the new-generation iPhones has been a bit overwhelming for Apple and Foxconn, the company in charge of manufacturing the devices.

For now, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are available only in the aforementioned countries, but will hit 20 additional markets on Sept. 26. By the end of the year, Apple plans to make its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus available in 115 countries worldwide.
