Sprint Nexus 6 Android 5.1 Lollipop update starts rolling out OTA

The Google Nexus 6 smartphone on Sprint is in for a neat treat, as the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop is ready to start rolling out.

Just a couple of days ago, Google officially announced its new Android 5.1 update to Lollipop. The new software treat will improve the general experience with various tweaks and bug fixes, but will also add a couple of sweet new features.

First of all, Android 5.1 Lollipop will finally add support for multiple SIM cards, which should come particularly in handy for Android One devices with dual-SIM support.

Second, and perhaps more important, the new update will increase the smartphone's security through a great new feature called Device Protection. This feature will keep your device locked in case it's lost or stolen, and will not unlock it until you sign in with your Google account. The device will remain locked even if someone attempts a factory data reset to wipe everything.

Lastly, Android 5.1 will also add HD voice calling capabilities for compatible devices.

As always with new updates, Nexus devices are the first in line to get the treat. Carrier versions may take a little longer in some cases, but Sprint has now announced that it's ready to push Android 5.1 to its Nexus 6. The update starts rolling out on Wednesday, March 11, and will arrive in stages. This means that some Nexus 6 owners on Sprint may have to wait a few days or so to receive the update, but Android 5.1 is nonetheless en route.

According to Sprint's support page for the Nexus 6, Android 5.1 will reach the device with build number LMY47D. In addition to Android 5.1 OS and factory reset protection, the latest update will further bring enhancements to sending MMS messages in the UK, as well as a fix for duplicate SMS messages being sent.

The update is arriving over-the-air (OTA), but you can also check for its availability by accessing your smartphone's settings menu. Once you receive Android 5.1 Lollipop on your Sprint Nexus 6, make sure to drop by our comment section below and tell us how it fares.

It remains unclear when other carriers will update their Nexus 6 to Android 5.1, but it shouldn't be long now. Verizon, meanwhile, is expected to finally start selling the Nexus 6 on March 12, and the handset is rumored to come with Android 5.1 out of the box.
