Microsoft announced a new Windows 10 Technical Preview that will make its way to more Lumia devices, as it will work on most Windows Phone handsets.
With the added code, the new Windows 10 Technical Preview will now be able to support more devices. Back in February, when Microsoft released the first test build of the latest OS, it only supported a small number of Lumias, such as the Lumia 630, Lumia 635, Lumia 636, Lumia 638, Lumia 730, and Lumia 830.
At the time, the company said the reason why only a handful of devices were supported was related to "very tiny OS partitions," which prevented the update from installing and loading properly. Microsoft has now added more tweaks to the OS, and more devices can now support it. Microsoft explains why the list of phones that supported the first build of Windows 10 Technical Preview was so limited:
"We had to select from the set of phones that had sufficient system partition sizes configured by the manufacturer. This was necessary for us to be able to in-place upgrade the phones," the company notes in a new blog post.
To solve this issue, Microsoft has been working on what it calls "partition stitching," a process that would allow it to dynamically resize the system partitions in order to pack the upgrade onto a larger number of phones.
The latest Windows 10 Technical Preview will now support a total of 36 devices, both low-end and high-end, old and new.At the same time, Microsoft points out that if it finds a device specific bug during its testing, the device in question will be pulled from the list until the company fixes the bug. The list of supported devices is still preliminary, and it may change based on testing.
The update should become available sometime in early April, reaching even Windows Phone devices with only 512MB of RAM. Microsoft has yet to announce a specific date for when the latest Windows 10 Technical Preview will become available, but we'll keep you up to date as soon as more details become available.
