'Sims 4' Update: Game to Break Gender Stereotypes

The makers of "The Sims 4" has added new options to the game to cater to the requests of its diverse customers. On Thursday, the game's lead producer, Lyndsay Pearson, wrote on The Sims blog about her team's big move in breaking gender stereotypes in the game's latest update.

"We're always talking to our fans about what they want to see in the game, and [we] have long been focused on creating an inclusive environment where all of our players can express themselves. We're a diverse team making a game for a diverse audience," Pearson said, as quoted by Mashable.

Pearson was alluding to the fact that "The Sims 4" has now expanded its options when it comes to creating Sims and their characteristics. The hit simulation game now offers a variety of choices for the physique of a Sim. Players can tailor their characters to have a more natural and diverse looking physical appearance. The walk style of the Sims has also new options and the same can be said of the voice of the characters. Cosmetic items can now be used by both feminine and masculine Sims.

Another feature enables players to switch the genders of their characters and even specify if their Sims are capable of reproducing with other Sims. The changes in the game include the removal of the restrictions on over 700 items that were previously specific to either the male or female sexes, as per PC Gamer.

To realize this breakthrough in gender stereotypes, Pearson said the team collaborated with the LGBT-founded organization GLAAD. Pearson added that they asked for the input of the GLAAD when they were making design and interface choices.

Speaking of their collaboration, GLAAD's Nick Adams said that it was a pleasure to work with the game's developers. Adams also said that they are more than eager to update the popular simulation game because it should accurately reflect the modern-day world that we live in. The new update for "The Sims 4" is now available for PC and Mac gamers.
