The new Star Trek series "Star Trek: Discovery" will focus on a female lead this time around. The new female lead which will be played by a talented actress will be a lieutenant commander on a star ship.
A previous "Star Trek" series also had a female lead, Voyager, which was played by Kate Mulgrew. Moreover, they had the first African-American black woman in the series, Nichelle Nichols. Writer-producer Bryan Fuller said he talked to the first African-American female astronaut, Mae Jamison, and got inspired to do the series with a female lead.
Bryan Fuller confirmed the news on Wednesday during the Television Critics Association's press tour in Beverly. EW reported that January next year, CBS Access will air the "Star Trek" series that has been rebooted for the television. The new series will definitely be different that its previous counterparts. It will be more diverse and the episodes will be more detailed. The story will center about the side of the "Star Trek" history that was never talked about that much.
According to Variety, CBS Access is still in the middle of casting its lead. They are still not finished with the casting of the whole cast but they are sure that the story will focus on a female lieutenant this time. Executive producer Bryan Fuller said he wanted the story to be told by a female this time. He wanted to show the relationship of the female lieutenant to her captain and her subordinates. They will also update the style of the set, its effects and the make-up of the characters.
Fuller also said that since the plot is 250 years in the future, he is sure that sexism does not exist anymore. Equality is what he wants to show. The cast will be more varied and he will even put gay characters too. Shooting of the series will begin in two months. It will be directed by David Semel. Its encore episode will air on CBS while the following episodes will aid on CBS Access.
