The Last of Us fans are quite disappointed since not a single clue of their much-anticipated sequel, The Last of Us 2 - rumored to be the next title, was mentioned during the last Playstation Meeting.
After its release back in June 2013, The Last of Us developers - Naughty Dog, right away got busy with another project: Uncharted 4. Now that the 4th installation for Uncharted has been released - actually a few months ago, people are wondering if the team is taking a short vacation or already jumping into developing the sequel for The Last of Us, DigitalSpy reports.
Well, what's the news?
As of this writing, all we have are speculations from diehard fans, sprinkled with a bunch of serious thought on what they want for the game.
It is given that The Last of Us 2 is definitely coming due to the success of its predecessor. Not just that, Nathan Drake's voice actor, Nolan North, said back in 2015:
"For now I know they're doing Last of Us 2, but my character in Last of Us kind of met an untimely demise."
Naughty Dog also slipped its tongue a bunch of times whenever The Last of Us 2 topic comes up. Ultimately, it was down to Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog Creative Director, who gave us a nice real scoop:
"The answer is - and this is totally honest, and I've said this in the past - that when Bruce [Straley] and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with new characters; ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas. And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4."
Checking the calendar, we are approaching the end of the year, so most probably it won't happened within 2016, but who knows, right? At least we are looking at next year for its release date, or maybe a maximum waiting time until 2018, which incidentally puts us exactly 5 years from the 1st title's release - also a good timeline for Ellie to be a grownup woman.
One thing fans hope for: we'll see it on an E3 2017 unveil next June.
What will be the console for The Last of Us 2?
The original was a PS3 exclusive but was remastered for the PS4, and eventually the PS4 Pro with 4K resolution.
A lot of people are hoping it will launch for both PS4 and Xbox One, but if it comes from Naughty Dog, Sony has rights to make it exclusive, but again, with all the progress and evolutions on gaming console concepts - even PS4 Pro is competing against PC, who knows what will happen next. Maybe Sony will allow other consoles to render The Last of Us 2.
What will be the story like?
As of this writing, what we officially know is that Druckman revealed some Naughty Dog dev team ideas including various storylines, new characters, of course recurring Joel and Ellie, even extremes like it being a sci-fi or fantasy game. At this point, what's certain is: anything goes, but Joel and Ellie will be there.
We think that it should traditionally follow the original game that was a cliffhanger, by the way. If the fantasy and sci-fi storylines should come out, as Druckman suggested, it must have emphasis on our beloved zombie characters.
