After a series of rumors and leaks that lasted for several months, Overwatch new character Sombra has finally been revealed during Blizzard's annual event BlizzCon. During the event, Sombra's full details have been formally introduced including her biography and skill set. Blizzard also teased new maps and arcade mode.
According to Game Rant, an animated short was released prior to Sombra's introduction entitled "Infiltration". The video shows Sombra working alongside Reaper and Widomaker to assassinate an important target. The earlier part of the animated short showed Sombra hacking her way to the security systems of Volskaya Industries. The mission eventually failed but it appears that the new Overwatch character had some secret motives of her own.
During the event, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime revealed on stage that the new character would be a stealth/offensive hero, who will be able to change the flow of the game in a range of both subtle and not-so-subtle ways. Based on its skill set, Sombra can hack the ability of other heroes preventing them to use the ability for a period of time. It was also announced that Sombra is now playable on BlizzCon and will arrive together with other new features next week to the Overwatch PTR.
Morhaime also revealed that additional maps will be added in the future. One of these is the Oasis. It is a high tech city that was terraformed in the Arabian Dessert. Another new map is called the Eco-Point Antarctica which will arrive next week along with Sombra. The Eco-Point Antarctica map was said to be the site where Mei was frozen in cryostasis long before.
The Eco-Point has been specially designed for the new mode Arcade. The new mode will showcase a range of new ways to play the game. There are no further details about it as of now. However, it is expected that Arcade will host 1v1 and 3v3 battles.
Overwatch is now available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Stay tuned for more Overwatch updates and further details from BlizzCon 2016.
