There is bad news for PlayStation Vue subscribers. Sony has announced its decision to drop from its cloud-based TV service all Viacom channels.
PlayStation Vue Losing Viacom Networks
According to PCMag, on Friday, Nov. 11, starting at 12:01 a.m. ET, several major channels will no longer be accessible to Vue consumers. On the list are included MTV, Spike, and Comedy Central.
Vue head Dwayne Benefield wrote in a blog post that PlayStation always strives to provide to its fans the best value and service. But as part of the ongoing evaluation of the PlayStation Vue offering, Sony decided that removing the bundle of channels from Viacom is the best way to continue to offer the most compelling value.
As Sony has also announced on Wednesday, Nov. 9, the addition of NBA TV and BBC America, it's not all bad news. CBS and Fox more local broadcast stations alongside with Vice is also coming soon to PlayStation Vue offering.
PlayStation Vue
In November 2014, Sony launched PlayStation Vue for select PS3 and PS4 owners as an invite-only beta preview. Later on, in March 2015, the Internet TV platform made its official debut, providing online access to several channels, including premium a la carte picks such as Fox Soccer Plus, Showtime, and Machinima.
Sony partnered this year with ABC, ESPN, and other Disney-owned networks, adding channels including HBO and NFL Network. The company also introduced Web support for PC and Mac as well as new PS Vue-enabled devices.
According to Cinema Blend, the PlayStation Vue was originally supposed to be Sony's answer to Microsoft's set-top box plans for the Xbox One. The PlayStation Vue aims to open up the Sony ecosystem to the world of TV through PlayStation devices. But while the service is gaining some new features, it is also losing several major channels in the process.
