A few days ago at the PlayStation Experience 2016 event, we got a new Death Stranding trailer with shocking revelations. We saw Guillermo del Toro and Mads Mikkelsen, setting the expectations bar way up high. The weird new trailer raises more questions than it answers - rather, it doesn't answer anything at all.
Eagle-eyed fans were able to dissect the newest trailer and even put it side by side with the E3 2016 one to discover something that might be a clue to what Death Stranding is all about. Here's what we know/speculate so far in Hideo Kojima's latest project.
Norman Reedus And The Baby Doll In Second Death Stranding Trailer Are Connected?
On E3 2016, we saw a naked Norman Reedus sobbing with a baby in his hands. After disappearing, we get a good look at where he is - a black beach with death all over him. We also get a good look at his upper body in which we see that he has a cross-shaped scar over where his belly button was supposed to be.
Then in the newest trailer, we see Guillermo del Toro, those weird slimy things, a baby in a capsule and Mads Mikkelsen with his undead soldiers. A huge part of the trailer, though, is the disfigured baby doll. It was briefly seen at the beginning, but then it moves closer to del Toro where we see that it has the same cross-shaped scar in its belly.
So, what does this signify? Is the doll a representation of Norman Reedus specifically or is the scar a common thing in that world? We can't be too sure for now, but we know it is an important element of the story.
How Are The Two Babies In The Two Death Stranding Trailers Connected?
Then let's talk about the actual Death Stranding baby. The first time we saw it, it had a black umbilical cord attached to it. It was lying next to Norman Reedus, then it's gone a few seconds into being held. Then we see another baby in the capsule del Toro was holding also still attached to a more normal-colored umbilical cord.
If you watch the trailers side by side, which can be seen below, you will see that it disappeared the exact moment the baby in the capsule appeared, which was after del Toro connected a tube to it.
This brings us to the theory that the two babies are one and the same. It was just transported to del Toro's capsule when he "summoned" it. It would also seem that he hesitated a bit before connecting that tube to the capsule, which might mean that the baby is crucial to both characters' survival so he would need to be careful when to teleport the baby.
Norman Reedus' And Guillermo Del Toro's Handcuffs Connect Them?
We also see "The Walking Dead" star having handcuffs in his left hand with the second hole unattached to anything and glowing blue. Interestingly, del Toro sports the same one in his right hand. Aside from the Death Stranding "coincidence" of the appearing/disappearing baby, the two may be connected through the handcuffs as well.
Kojima has already explicitly said that Mikkelsen is the villain of Death Stranding. Reedus is assumed to be the protagonist while del Toro is presumed to be an important character in the story. But I think both are the main characters (and the baby) and players will get the chance to play both.
So what do you think of the Death Stranding trailers? Is Hideo Kojima onto something revolutionary again? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
