WWE Smackdown Latest Update: AJ Styles' Comeback Confirmed; James Ellsworth Challenges The World Champion

After a week of hiatus from live events, WWE champion AJ Styles has been confirmed to go back in the ring to defend his title. A recent announcement from WWE stated that James Ellsworth will challenge Styles on Smackdown on Wednesday, Dec. 14 in Washington, DC.

AJ Styles vs James Ellsworth

WWE has officially announced that AJ Styles will be back in the ring after he had suffered a minor ankle injury during the WWE TLC main event. It had him retain over Dean Ambrose. His opponent back-dropped Style from outside of the ring. The live Smackdown event was originally scheduled on Tuesday, Dec. 13 but was postponed due to Styles' injury.

Ambrose lost to Ellsworth who sustained the recent World Title at the Tables, Ladders and Chairs event and the Intercontinental Championship from last week's Smackdown event. Ambrose will not let this slide so a revenge is likely to happen in the future. Meanwhile, Ellsworth has to prepare for Styles as of now.

Back in September, Styles was able to grab Smackdown's top title defeating Ellsworth at Backlash. In the past months, Ellsworth had recorded disqualification, Ladder Match victories and pinfall against Styles and that's with Ambrose's helping hands. If Ambrose keeps his distance away from Styles, the former title holder should be able to reclaim his position.

The Miz, Tag Team Challengers' Appearance

On other Smackdown news, a huge possibility that Intercontinental champion The Miz and new challengers to Tag Team champions Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Randy Orton might surface during the event. In the women's division, Becky Lynch may slant for a rematch against Women's champion Alex bliss. On the other hand, Nikki Bella continues with her search as to who really attacked her during the Survivor Series.

WWE Smackdown will be live Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 1:00 a.m. ET on Sky Sports 5.
