The NES Classic Edition has spearheaded what has been a great year for old school gamers, with the massive hype surrounding the device causing worldwide supply shortages. Nintendo, while struggling to keep up with the constant rise of demand for the NES Classic Edition, might already be looking forward to the next up and coming retro console that it will launch.
Nintendo Hints At SNES Classic Edition
A Twitter bot account that automatically tracks trademark filings has found one made by Nintendo that involves an image of the classic SNES controller. While this could possibly end up being nothing, the timing of the trademark filing could also mean that Nintendo is already planning for the inevitable SNES Classic Edition.
About the NES Classic Edition
The NES Classic Edition is basically a specially designed box with a basic board that is preloaded with NES games. If Nintendo would be using the same concept for the SNES Classic Edition, it would only have to create a new design for the case that looks much like the SNES and re-program the basic board to instead operate the emulator intended for SNES games.
Additionally, instead of the NES controller, Nintendo would have to bundle the SNES Classic Edition with a SNES controller, which could be the reason why the company has filed a trademark for the said accessory.
What the future holds for Nintendo
As of the moment, Nintendo is focusing all of its marketing initiatives and beyond on the upcoming Nintendo Switch hybrid console. If Nintendo will indeed be planning to launch a SNES Classic Edition, the most probable release date for the console would be before the 2017 holiday season, similar to the time when the NES Classic Edition was launched.
Hopefully, this time around there would be enough units to accommodate every buyer of the SNES, unlike the massive shortage that the NES Classic Edition experienced. Overall, with the possibility of the SNES, the NES console will not survive any longer.
