A few days ago, we got more details on what we can expect once Nintendo Switch comes around and suffice to say, we're pretty excited. Aside from the Legend of Zelda and Super Mario titles, the other games in the lineup is looking promising. However, are they enough for gamers to buy the console?
Legend Of Zelda And Super Mario? Sign Me Up!
As a hardcore Legend of Zelda fan, Nintendo doesn't even have to try to sell Nintendo Switch to me. The trailers so far look amazing and I can't wait to get my hands on it. For me, spending $300 for a single game is worth it. What got me really sold, though, is all the other games the hybrid console has in store for us.
With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, ARMS and Fire Emblem Warriors, I wouldn't think twice about buying the Nintendo Switch. I would not worry about missing out on great games either as various third-party titles have already been announced for the console, such as Skyrim, Dragon Quest and more. I suspect we'll be seeing more from AAA developers in the months to come.
But... $300 As The Base Price With No Bundle?
However, not everyone shares the same opinion as I do. For a very basic bundle, $300 seems expensive for just the console. The price tag gets you the console, the dock, left and right Joy-cons, a grip controller, and wrist-straps. That's it. Not even a Legend of Zelda bundle. We don't even know if the specs are worth it.
At the same price, you can buy a Xbox One S bundled with Battlefield 1 or FIFA 17 or another title. A PlayStation 4 Mini bundled with Uncharted 4 or whatever also sets you back about $300. You can even buy a Special Edition console at that price. See where I'm going here?
The Real Price Of Nintendo Switch Doesn't End There
For a full Nintendo Switch experience, you have to be prepared to shell out more than $300. Let's see here: $30 for a Grip controller (because it won't charge your Joy-cons without it), $80 for another pair of Joy-cons, $90 for another dock and so on.
Other money sinks include additional storage because Legend of Zelda will reportedly take up half of the built-in memory, the Pro controller that costs $70 and the online service that's already receiving backlash from the community. I assume I would need to buy two or more of these to fully enjoy the console.
Let's take this article from HeyPoorPlayer for example. The writer pre-ordered a Nintendo Switch from two different online retailers with the intention of canceling one. However, he quickly came to realize that two sets for $600 is not a bad deal after all.
Apart from the basic bundle, he planned on buying another set of Joy-cons, a TV dock and a Joy-con grip. These items would amount to $200, just $100 short of a whole new other set that comes with all these accessories anyway (plus wrist-straps!).
So, Is Nintendo Switch's Lineup Worth $300+++?
Now that we've established how expensive Nintendo Switch really is, our decision-making basically boils down to the games lineup. Are they good enough to spend that much on? Are the Nintendo exclusives worth the hefty price tag? Well, for me, they are. But what about you? Are you buying the Switch?
