GPS Spoofing Rampant In Pokemon GO; Niantic May Drop Hammer Ban Again [Speculation]

An online survey reported that almost one out of ten Pokemon GO players surveyed admitted the use of GPS spoofing. There is a possibility that Niantic may wave the hammer ban if this survey turns out to be true.

Survey Findings

Straw Poll recently conducted an online survey with regards to GPS spoofing in Pokemon GO. It turns out that this cheating practice is still alive and well in the game. It could be recalled that mobile game developer Niantic banned a lot of players for using this cheat method.

Purpose of GPS Spoofing

Most of the Pokemon GO cheaters use GPS spoofing to win gym battles and hatching eggs. If the results are valid, this may put into question the game's gym system. This may indicate that a substantial number of gyms are controlled by dishonest players.

How Accurate Is The Survey

The number of Pokemon GO players have considerably gone down in recent months. The remainders though are still considerable and their numbers are still in the millions based on the latest survey. If the reported cheaters percentage is taken into consideration, that's a lot of people to ban out of the game.

Some critics though doubt the veracity of the claim. One observer believes that the survey made no distinction between casual and hardcore players. It seems unfair to include casual players in the projection. It seems unreasonable for occasional players to resort to GPS spoofing since they don't regularly play the game. The hardcore players or at least some of them are more likely to use GPS spoofing since they like playing it so much.

Still, this may give reason for Niantic to rid Pokemon GO of cheaters and GPS spoofers. Some observers believe or hope that the developer will implement the same anti-GPS spoofing tactics it implemented in Ingress. For now though, Niantic is silent about the Pokemon GO survey.
