Net buzz loves talking about new devices before they're even announced or officially named. We've seen this already, with everything from the Xbox 720 (not really called that by Microsoft yet) to Android Key Lime Pie (not really called that by Google yet). Yet we can't help but talk about the new Nokia Lumia 928 ... despite the fact that not only has it never been mentioned by Nokia officially, but the company itself has told iTech Post the very idea of the Lumia 928 is a "dirty, dirty rumor."
We, of course, know that Nokia, along with Samsung and other mobile manufacturers, loves to pummel the marketplace with as many new devices as possible — such as the recent Lumia 920, Lumia 720 and Lumia 521. Clearly, Nokia has something else new in the works and now we have a tip that it might in fact be the Nokia Lumia 928, which might finally be officially announced as early as next week.
Considering the fact that, as relayed by Neowin, Nokia saw some major losses in Q1 2013 (as well as only 400,000 Lumia phones sold in North America, as opposed to the 700,000 sold in the previous quarter there), Nokia definitely needs to get something hot and "next big thing" out there sooner than later. Might it be the mythical Lumia 928 that the company itself seems so adamant about denying?
There have been some rumors, along with the Nokia Lumia 928 of the Nokia Lumia "Catwalk" and the EOS , bandied about the Web that these phones may all be the same device (namely considering the fact that they're all still very much in the realm of leaks/speculation and are all being touted as whatever Nokia may have coming up next).
The idea that the Nokia Lumia 928, Nokia EOS and Nokia Lumia "Catwalk" are the same device is apparently not the case, though, as determined too by Neowin, which has reported a tip from a fellow who dropped a line on nokia-lumia-928.com that the Nokia Lumia 928 will be announced next week (Thursday, April 25).
"The 928 is initially expected to be exclusive to Verizon in the U.S., a lighter, thinner variant of the current flagship Lumia 920, already available on AT&T in the U.S. and on other networks around the world," Neowin says.
Reasons this announcement date of the Nokia Lumia 928 makes sense, according to nokia-lumia-928.com:
1. Verizon tends to announce its new phones (like the Nokia Lumia 822) on Thursdays (April 25).
2. Since Verizon is likely launching the Samsung Galaxy S4 at the end of May, it would be a good idea for the company to launch the Nokia Lumia 928 a month prior as its flagship phone for the month leading up to the highly anticipated S4.
3. "Another reason May 2th[sic] is an interesting date, is that on that date according to various sources the exclusivity deal with AT&T for the Lumia 920 ends."
If this tip turns out to be true, after the Nokia Lumia 928 is officially announced by Nokia on Thursday, the phone itself will be made available only a few weeks later — May 2 or May 9.
