Square Enix reveals why they brought back Final Fantasy XII over the other titles in the mainline franchise. Meanwhile, The Zodiac Age made an appearance at PAX East featuring some additional modes.
Final Fantasy XII Makes a Surprising Comeback
The upcoming remaster focuses on the protagonist Vaan and his journey with an unlikely group of allies that aim to take down Judge Gabranth. Back then, the original game became a PS2 classic for its original system that was unique to the franchise. In line with this, Producer Hiroaki Kato and director Takashi Katano had a recent interview with GameSpot to reveal why they chose to revive the game.
To begin with, Kato claimed that he and Takashi worked on the original game and had a lot of fond memories with the installment. Following the success of the FFX remaster, they came up with the idea of giving the 12th game the same treatment.
Another reason was that they created the original game with relatively high specs. Because of this, the team had been always thinking of making an HD version in the future. However, one thing that Kato wanted was to have the original members work on the game. Despite the struggles of trying to find an open schedule, the team seemingly pulled it off despite their involvement in different projects.
That aside, Kato noted that players who tried the original title will now be introduced to the International Zodiac Job System, which was only limited to Japan at the time. Because of this, the Western audience will feel some new balance changes in battle. On the other hand, those who have yet to play the original game will be able to experience an RPG that includes fighting, field exploration and character growth.
Appearance At This Year's PAX East
Similarly, Bleeding Cool News reports that the game was featured at PAX East with new videos introducing players to the Gambit system and Trial mode. The latter mode allows players to fight through various successive stages with characters joining the fray as support. Moreover, Square also revealed the Standard and Collector's edition of the game, which will be released on the same date.
Final Fantasy XII contains an expansive adventure filled with action and unique characters. Despite being quite dated, it seems like the game might still be able to compete with modern day RPGs. Fans will be able to purchase the upcoming edition on July 11 for the PS4.
