Persona 5 and NieR Automata are the king and queen of JRPGs after their impressive numbers following each game's release. Despite their target niche, each franchise has earned their own set of followers.
With many games taking a more streamlined route in terms of combat and gameplay, there are still a few titles that retain the tradition sense of classic role-playing games. Sadly, these titles are treated more like a niche due to their scarcity and target audience. Games like Final Fantasy has been taking a different route in terms of combat and narratives while other games like Chrono Trigger or Suikoden are memorable titles lost in the past.
Even so, there are still some similar titles that are standing strong to this day like the Tales of and Atelier series. While they might not be as popular as other triple-A titles, they are proof that traditional Japnese RPGs are far from dead. Similarly, PVPLive reports that Automata and the latest Persona game have broken the one million shipment mark.
Persona 5 has shipped 1.5 million copies, which are a major number for this once-niche RPG, as per Polygon. This has been the series' fastest-selling game with over 340,000 copies sold during the first three days of its release in Japan. The game has also stolen the hearts of both fans and critics alike for its stunning gameplay and stylish presentation.
NieR Automata, on the other hand, might be more fast-paced but has found its redemption from the previous games in the series. The game has its own set of quirks that set it apart from other similar titles but that is one reason why the fanbase loves it so much.
Despite its odd and strange narratives, NieR Automata and Persona 5 are not afraid to try something different despite the ongoing trends around them. There is no doubt that these two installments will continue to prosper and possibly gain more fans in the process.
