Samsung is squeezing as much as it can out of its current flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S4 mini, S4 Active, and S4 Zoom have all been leaked. Samsung has accidentally leaked another Galaxy S4, and it's reportedly named the Galaxy S4 Mega.
In a recent article I questioned if Samsung was releasing so many smartphones with different-sized screens to help consumers find the perfect display size, or if it was just releasing all these new smartphone variants for increased market share? Well, just a few weeks after releasing the Samsung Galaxy S4 we've already reported on leaked images of both the Galaxy S4 mini and the Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 with a Nexus user experience and a new leak by Samsung itself lists an upcoming Galaxy S4 Mega. Do we really need yet another Galaxy S4 variant?
SAMMOBILE is reporting that Samsung accidentally leaked unannounced and "upcoming" smartphones in its Samsung WatchOn app. The app uses the IR blaster in the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Mega series to turn the smartphones into universal remote controls with an accompanying program guide.
Samsung lists "What's New" in its WatchOn app and as you can see from the above screenshot it lists:
"Added support for upcoming S4 Mega, S4 mini, and S4 Active."
It's unclear if this is an actual Galaxy S4 Mega with a mega-sized screen or a typo meant for the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy Mega 6.3, since both feature an IR blaster.
If there really is an upcoming Galaxy S4 Mega, Samsung is once again releasing another S4 variant for the sake of just releasing a device to capitalize off of the Galaxy S4 name. With so many different Galaxy smartphones, and now all these new Galaxy S4 spin-offs, Samsung is going to confuse consumers even more than it already has with all of these variants. Does it really need a separate Galaxy Mega series and a new Galaxy S4 Mega as well?
If the leak is true, it will help Samsung sell a few more smartphones, but it also gives the impression that the company is just repackaging new smartphones, and potentially hurting sales of existing and upcoming Samsung smartphones. The Galaxy S4 Mega will presumably have a display between 5.5-inches and possibly up to 6.3-inches. That would make the smartphone compete with Samsung's Galaxy Note series, including the upcoming Galaxy Note 3 with its rumored 6-inch display, and its new Galaxy Mega series.
Flooding the market with all these Galaxy S4 variants and Galaxy Megas might help Samsung in the short-term, but it's the future Samsung should be thinking about. Once you confuse a consumer with so many options on similar smartphones they might just get frustrated and move on to another company's smartphone that has a real focus, and that's not something the Samsung wants.
