Samsung hasn't officially announced the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active but new images and details of the upcoming S4 variant have leaked.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 will be a Galaxy S4 variant, like the Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S4 with Nexus user experience, and the upcoming Galaxy S4 Zoom. The Galaxy S4 Active is expected to be marketed as a rugged smartphone that is dust- and water-resistant. The S4 Active also breaks from Samsung's love of plastic cases and uses a metallic shell for durability.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is expected to feature a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 full HD display with 480ppi (pixels per inch), 1.9GHz quad-core processor with Adreno 320 GPU and an 8-megapixel rear camera. It's unclear if Samsung is using a Super AMOLED display in the Galaxy S4 Active, so we'll have to wait for another leak or an official announcement from Samsung. As you can see from the leaked image, the Galaxy S4 Active will also use a new physical button layout below its display.
GSM Arena is reporting that its tipster has told the site that the Galaxy S4 active will ditch the usual Samsung plastic case for a metal case to make the phone more durable. The S4 Active will also have a special waterproof and dustproof coating on the smartphone to protect it, hence the Active name.
Samsung is following Sony's lead with making the Galaxy S4 Active waterproof. When Sony announced its Xperia Z, one of the main features it loved to highlight and demonstrate was its ability to be submerged in up to three feet of water for up to 30 minutes. This feature will make anyone who has had the misfortune of dropping a smartphone into a toilet, pool, or any other body of water for that matter feel confident in knowing the Galaxy S4 Active will survive these types of accidents.
While Samsung has not officially confirmed the Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 mini, and Galaxy S4 Zoom, the smartphones are expected to be announced very soon. According to SAMMOBILE, Samsung is expected to announce the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active some time this month.
