Sony has announced the Xperia Z Ultra phablet, which may give stiff competition to the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
The Xperia Z Ultra phablet was rumored for a long time and finally the Japanese company has taken the wraps off the device on June 25 at an event in Shanghai.
At the official launch, Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications said, "The Xperia Z Ultra is the most exciting revolution in large-screen smartphone entertainment devices with both the slimmest and largest Full HD smartphone display in the world that is second to none. We're already bringing the best of Sony technology and design across a range of premium smartphones and tablets, and now we are bringing this same premium offering to the large-screen smartphone segment, setting a new standard for others to follow."
The Xperia Z Ultra packs in top-end features which may attract phablet customers. It is the first phablet to get the latest and the powerful quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2 GHz. The phablet sports a 6.44-inch Triluminous display technology, taken from Sony's latest TV portfolio, with a 1080p Full HD resolution.
The phablet also packs in 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of on-board storage with the option to expand the memory using a microSD card. It is equipped with an 8-megapixel rear-facing Exmor RS sensor and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.
At 0.25-inch (6.5mm), the Xperia Z Ultra is currently the world's thinnest Full HD phablet. The handset weighs 7.47 ounces (212 grams) and has a tempered glass chassis with OmniBalance design, the same found in the Xperia Z and the Xperia Tablet Z.
Along with a sleek design, the Xperia Z Ultra is also durable with an IP55/IP58 rating, which means that the phablet is dust proof as well as water resistant (1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes).
The Xperia Z Ultra will come pre-loaded with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system. Sony announced that the phablet will come in black, white and purple colors and will hit the shelves in Q3 2013.
