Nokia Lumia 1020 ready for its appearance on July 11, should other handsets be worried?

Nokia has not confirmed which handset it will unveil at its July 11 event but chances are high that the Lumia 1020 will make its debut.

The Lumia 1020 is one of the most anticipated Windows Phone 8 (WP8) handsets of this year and will throw the gauntlet to rival smartphones like the HTC One, iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4 to name a few .

Rumors and images of the upcoming Nokia Lumia 1020 have been popping up online frequently and recently, a leaked image of AT&T's internal inventory suggested that the handset is coming to the carrier in three different color options; black, white and yellow.

A WPCentral report says "The Lumia 1020 is now being listed in AT&T product inventory and has been assigned a SKU number. Our anonymous tipster also noted that the Lumia 1020 has been seen in the hands of AT&T employees for testing."

With so many rumors of the Lumia 1020 doing the rounds, the launch of the handset seems impending. However, the smartphone arena is full of big-wigs like the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, iPhone 5 and more. Moreover, Nokia has also launched WP8-powered Lumia 925 for T-Mobile and the Lumia 928 for Verizon. Even though AT&T already has the WP8-powered Nokia Lumia 920, many customers have high hopes that the carrier will add a new top-end Windows handset to its smartphone portfolio.

Many smartphone owners now prefer to have a top-end camera included in their smartphones. The Lumia 1020 will fulfill the demand of a top-notch camera with its 41-megapixel rear-facing shooter. Samsung has already launched the Galaxy S4 Zoom which has a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera. Rumors also suggest that Sony already has a smartphone in the pipeline with Cybershot technology.

Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One have been received well by both smartphone enthusiasts and tech gurus alike. However, the popularity of WP8 smartphones is also increasing in the smartphone space and many customers looking for an alternative to Android and iOS may opt for a WP8 smartphone.

AT&T is currently selling only three WP8 handsets: the Nokia Lumia 820, Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X. The carrier is selling the high-end Lumia 920 for $99.99 on a two-year contract and for $449.99 outright. Considering that the upcoming Lumia 1020 will be a high-end smartphone, it could have a steeper price tag when compared to the the Lumia 920.

The Lumia 920 has been one of the most popular WP8 smartphones around and has also given decent competition to other smartphones available in the market. Similarly, the Lumia 1020 may also give stiff competition to other WP8 handsets as well as Android, iOS and BlackBerry smartphones.

July 11 is just around the corner and Nokia will likely take the curtains off the Lumia 1020 and release more details about the device. Stay tuned.
