Microsoft's GDR2 software update brings problems to HTC 8X

Microsoft recently began rolling out the GDR2 update for Windows Phone 8 (WP8) powered smartphones to non-Nokia devices, the HTC 8X and Samsung ATIV S. Now reports suggest the software update brings problems to the HTC 8X.

The HTC 8X is one of the first WP8-powered handsets launched in Sept. 2012. The handset was made available by AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile from Nov. 2012 onwards in the U.S.

The GDR2 update is expected to bring HTML5 improvements, FM Radio, a new Data Sense feature, VoIP apps like Skype and Lync have improved stability and performance.

However, some HTC 8X users have complained that they are facing some issues following the latest software update on their handsets. Previously, some HTC 8X owners also faced random phone reboots which was fixed by the Portico software update.

The GDR2 update is a minor one but with Microsoft slated to push out the GDR3 software update (also known as Windows Phone Blue), WP8 devices will get significant feature improvements and updates, including a new notification center, improved multi-tasking and more.

"Yesterday i updated my htc 8x , and today suddenly while watching movie on it , went dead , but the lcd led is on . confused .... before update all was merry and fine , is this a bug in the GDR2 update," complained an unhappy customer on a WPCentral forum.

Complaints in the WPCentral forum reveal that most of the users are facing problems while playing media files on their handsets.

Even though software updates are expected to bring improvements and bug fixes to the devices, this is not the first time that the update has brought along problems. Previously, Nokia released the 1308 software update for its Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone. Following the software update many customers faced problems which led the Finnish company to temporarily halt the software release.

At the time, Nokia also confirmed that it was aware of the issue and soon after released the 1314 software update to fix the problems caused by the 1308 update.

If you have downloaded the GDR2 update on your HTC 8X, are you facing any problems?
